Born in New York City; educated at Drake U., USC. In the film business since his student days, he gained esteem for his many TV documentaries and compilation films. In the late 60s his company, Wolper Productions, ventured into feature films and was absorbed by Metromedia. Wolper produced some of the films himself and was executive producer on others: THE DEVIL'S BRIGADE (1968), THE BRIDGE AT REMAGEN (1969), I LOVE MY WIFE (1970), WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (1971), VISIONS OF EIGHT (Munich Olympics docu., 1973), THIS IS ELVIS (1981), IMAGINE: JOHN LENNON (1988), MURDER IN THE FIRST (1995), SURVIVING PICASSO (1996) and L.A. CONFIDENTIAL (1997, executive producer). He produced the 1977 TV mini-series "Alex Haley's: Roots" and 1985-86's "North and South I & II."
His house in Napa Valley, CA, with two lakes and a 9-hole golf course sold in 1999 for $9 million. Wolper sits on the USC School of Cinema-Television's Board of Councilors. He received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1985.
