Born Theoni Athanasiou Vachlioti in Salonika, Greece; educated at the American School, Athens, and Goodman Memorial Theatre, Chicago. She began designing for the stage in 1950 and became established as a leading Broadway and Hollywood wardrobe stylist in the 60s. She won an Oscar® for THE GREAT GATSBY (1974) and Tony Awards for Annie (1977) and Barnum (1980). Her stage credits also include A Chorus Line and 42nd Street. Known for the large budgets she needs to realize her beautiful designs, her other notable credits include NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY (1968, Lee Remick's and Eileen Heckart's costumes), I NEVER SANG FOR MY FATHER (1970), THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR (1975, Faye Dunaway's costumes), NETWORK (1976), THE CHEAP DETECTIVE, CHEAP DETECTIVE and THE EYES OF LAURA MARS (all 1978), THE ROSE (1979), THE FIRST DEADLY SIN (1980, Faye Dunaway's costumes), RICH AND FAMOUS (1981), ANNIE and MONSIGNOR (both 1982), GHOSTBUSTERS (1984), MOONSTRUCK (1987), STANLEY & IRIS (1990), OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY (1991), ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES (1993), THE FIRST WIVES CLUB and THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES (both 1996) and THE RAGE: CARRIE 2 (1999). Married to actor Tom Aldredge, who played Hugh DeAngelis on cable TV's "The Sopranos."
