Born Alan Herman in Canada. Screenplay credits include LIES MY FATHER TOLD ME (1960, also story), THE WEBSTER BOY (1962), IT RAINED ALL NIGHT THE DAY I LEFT (1980), FALLING IN LOVE AGAIN (1980), LOVE STREAMS (from his play) and his last film, BETHUNE: THE MAKING OF A HERO (1990, from his novel).
Ted Allan was a tireless supporter of the Communist ideal whose world was shattered by the revelations following Stalin's death. His resulting nervous breakdown echoed the anguish of believers around the world. Ironically, after Allan worked his way out of his breakdown, he produced some of his best work, such as John Cassavetes' LOVE STREAMS. The Canadian documentary TED ALLAN: MINSTREL BOY OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY looks at how Allan's life and work reflect a more humorous acceptance of himself. He died in Toronto in 1995.
