Young Winston (1972) Born in Edmunton, London, England. Entered British films at Boulting Brothers as an uncredited draughtsman for BRIGHTON ROCK / YOUNG SCARFACE (1947). Moved into art direction in the early 1950s (MURDER WITHOUT CRIME and PORTRAIT OF CLARE, both 1950; TALK OF A MILLION, 1951; APPOINTMENT IN LONDON, 1952; SOUTH OF ALGEIRS, 1953; THEY WHO DARE and THE PURPLE PLAIN, both 1954; THE END OF THE AFFAIR, 1955; WICKED AS THEY COME, 1956; THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI, 1957; COUNT FIVE AND DIE and INDISCREET, both 1958; and COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS, 1959). Became production designerin 1953, and his credits include TURN THE KEY SOFTLY (1953), BEAUTIFUL STRANGER (1954), MAN IN THE MOON (1960), MR. TOPAZE (1961), BILLY BUDD (1962), MASQUERADE and BUNNY LAKE IS MISSING (both 1965), A COUNTESS FROM HONG KONG and THE BOBO (both 1967), THE MAGUS (1968), OH! WHAT A LOVELY WAR (1969) and TAM LIN (1972). YOUNG WINSTON (1972) was his last film.
