![]() One-sheet design for Anatomy of a Murder (1959) |
Born in New York City; educated at Art Students League and Brooklyn College. Worked for 10 years as a free-lance designer. In 1946 formed Saul Bass & Associates, Inc., in Los Angeles, through which he later revolutionized the style of feature film credits by introducing imaginatively drawn animation to replace the conventional listing of names in titles. His animated titles often suggested the theme and the mood of a film, functioning more like a prologue and epilogue rather than a mere cluttered printed foreward. His credits were seen in such features as (in chronological order) THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM, AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, VERTIGO, THE BIG COUNTRY, ANATOMY OF A MURDER, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, PSYCHO, OCEAN'S 11, EXODUS, SPARTACUS, WEST SIDE STORY, WALK ON THE WILD SIDE, ADVISE AND CONSENT, NINE HOURS TO RAMA, IT'S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD, THE CARDINAL, THE VICTORS, IN HARM'S WAY, BUNNY LAKE IS MISSING, SECONDS, GRAND PRIX, ALIEN, BROADCAST NEWS, BIG, THE WAR OF THE ROSES, GOODFELLAS, DOC HOLLYWOOD, the 1991 remake of CAPE FEAR, MR. SATURDAY NIGHT, THE AGE OF INNOCENCE and CASINO.
Bass also produced and directed TV commercials, animated shorts, and documentaries -- the latter of which garnered him 3 Oscar® nominations and 1 Award.
