Born in Broadstairs, Kent, England. He has written scores for British films since the age of 20. Other notable (non-nominated) credits include THE MARK (1961), BILLY LIAR (1963), EQUUS (1977), THE BRINK'S JOB (1978), YANKS (1979), THE RETURN OF THE SOLDIER (1982), ENCHANTED APRIL (1992), FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL (1994) and SWANN (1996). In recent years, he has composed frequently for television.

Bennett received a Knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 1998.
