Born in San Diego, CA; educated at Notre Dame (B.A., M.A.). He began his film career in 1963, playing Frank Sinatra's naive kid brother in COME BLOW YOUR HORN and lated portrayed pleasant but insipid juveniles and young leads in other Hollywood productions. In the early 1970s he ventured into production, scoring a box-office hit with THE STING (1973). He made yet another successful transition in 1980, when he turned out his first film as a director, MY BODYGUARD. All along, he continued acting, in TV as well as in films.

As producer -- STEELYARD BLUES (1973), HARRY AND WALTER GO TO NEW YORK (1976, executive producer), THE LITTLE DRAGONS (1980, also actor), UNTAMED HEART (1993, also director), IN THE TIME OF THE BUTTERFLIES (2001), and the made-for-TV movies "Beyond the Call" (1996, also director), "The Fixer" (1998, also actor) and "Last Call" (2002).
