Born in San Francisco, CA. Documentary filmmaker who started out making surfer docus in 1958 with SLIPPERY WHEN WET. Five more of them followed until he hit it big with what has become the definitive surfing movie, THE ENDLESS SUMMER (1966), which followed two young surfers as they travelled to Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Hawaii and California, looking for the elusive "Endless Summer." Brown continued to explore extreme sports with his next three films: THE INCREDIBLE PAIR OF SKIS (1967), ON ANY SUNDAY (1971, motorcycle racing with Steve McQueen) and THE EDGE (1975). After almost 30 years, Brown returned to the beach with THE ENDLESS SUMMER 2 (1994), which followed the trail of two young surfers (again) travelling the globe in search of a good wave or two. Some of the people and locales from the first movie reappeared in the second.

Brown's son, Dana Brown, is also a surfing & motocross filmmaker.
