Born in Montréal, Québec, Canada; educated at the Quebec Conservatory of Drama. Began her career on the French-Canadian stage and established herself as a thoughtful, mature screen lead in the 1960s. Bujold, who first came to attention in Phillipe de Broca's cult classic KING OF HEARTS (1966), became an international star with ANNE OF THE THOUSAND DAYS (1969) but proceeded to appear in a string of run-of-the-mill movies (EARTHQUAKE, 1974; COMA, 1978; MURDER BY DECREE, 1979, THE LAST FLIGHT OF NOAH'S ARK, 1980) before returning to form in the 1980s.
She became a member of Alan Rudolph's informal stock company, giving suitably cryptic performances opposite Keith Carradine in CHOOSE ME (1984), TROUBLE IN MIND (1985) and THE MODERNS (1988). Bujold was also memorable opposite dueling Jeremy Ironses in David Cronenberg's DEAD RINGERS (1988). More recent credits include DEAD INNOCENT (1996), THE HOUSE OF YES (1997), LAST NIGHT (1998), EYE OF THE BEHOLDER (1999), ALEX IN WONDER (2001), JERICHO MANSIONS and FINDING HOME (both 2003), DOWNTOWN: A STREET TALE (2004), MON PETIT DOIGT M'A DIT... (2005), and DISAPPEARANCES and DÉLIVEREZ-MOI (both 2006). Bujold gave up the demanding job of Captain Kathryn Janeway of the USS Voyager ("Star Trek: Voyager", 1995) after only one day of filming. Kate Mulgrew followed her into the Captain's Chair. Footage of Bujold appearing as Janeway is one of the most sought-after video pieces among certain Trekkies. Married from 1967 to 1973 to Paul Almond, who directed her in five films (ISABEL, 1968; ACT OF THE HEART, 1970; JOURNEY, 1972; FINAL ASSIGNMENT, 1980; and THE DANCE GOES ON, 1991). Their son, Matt Almond, is an actor and director.
