Born in San Mateo, CA; educated at Colorado State University, Fort Collins (theater arts). Lean, cool, laconic leading man who dropped out of college and appeared on Broadway in the counter-culture musical Hair (1969-70) before moving to Los Angeles. At the age of 21 Carradine appeared in his first two films, A GUNFIGHT (1971) and Robert Altman's McCABE AND MRS. MILLER (1971). In 1975 Carradine co-starred as a country and western singer in Altman's masterpiece, NASHVILLE, winning a best song Oscar ® for his ballad, "I'm Easy." Carradine became the first composer to perform his own Oscar-winning song in a movie. His recording of the song reached #17 on the US charts in August, 1976.
More recently, he starred in a series of stylish, intriguing films by Altman's former protégé Alan Rudolph, including CHOOSE ME (1984) and THE MODERNS (1988). He was nominated for Broadway's 1991 Tony® Award as Best Actor (Musical) for playing the title character in The Will Rogers Follies. Other notable screen appearances include EMPEROR OF THE NORTH (1973), WELCOME TO L.A. (1977), PRETTY BABY and SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (both 1978), THE LONG RIDERS (1980), SOUTHERN COMFORT (1981), TROUBLE IN MIND (1985), COLD FEET (1989), DADDY'S DYIN'... WHO'S GOT THE WILL (1990), THE BALLAD OF THE SAD CAFE (1991), THE TIE THAT BINDS and WILD BILL (both 1995), 2 DAYS IN THE VALLEY (1996), A THOUSAND ACRES (1997) and THE HUNTER'S MOON (1999). More recent screen credits include CAHOOTS (2001), FÅLKAR and THE ANGEL DOLL (both 2002), THE ADVENTURES OF OCIEE NASH (2003), OUR VERY OWN and THE CALIFORNIANS (both 2005), ELVIS AND ANABELLE, THE DEATH AND LIFE OF BOBBY Z, LAKE CITY and ALL HAT (all 2007), and WINTER OF FROZEN DREAMS (2008). Carradines' frequent TV appearances include episodes of "Arli$$", "Street Time", "Spider-Man", "Deadwood", "Complete Savages" and "Criminal Minds." Carradine is the son of actor John Carradine (1906-1988), brother of actor-producer Robert Carradine (b. 1954), half-brother of actor David Carradine (b. 1936), and father, by actress Shelly Plimpton, of actress Martha Plimpton (b. 1970).
