Born in Bascom, FL; educated at the University of Florida and Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts (theater arts). Theater-trained, classically beautiful star of the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Dunaway made her screen debut in Otto Preminger's HURRY SUNDOWN (1967) and went on to turn in a series of superb performances in films such as BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967), with Warren Beatty, THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1968), with Steve McQueen, as Milady de Winter in THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1973) and THE FOUR MUSKETEERS (1974), in CHINATOWN (1974), opposite Jack Nicholson, and NETWORK (1976), with Peter Finch. The 1970s also saw her in VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED (1976), EYES OF LAURA MARS and THE CHAMP (both 1978).
Dunaway was acclaimed for her portrayal of movie star and abusive mother Joan Crawford in the uneven MOMMIE DEAREST (1981), but her subsequent appearances [THE WICKED LADY (1983) and SUPERGIRL (1984)] seemed to tend increasingly toward self-parody of her "grande dame" image. In 1987 she boosted her flagging critical reputation with a bold performance as wealthy boozer Wanda Wilcox in BARFLY, opposite Mickey Rourke. Dunaway produced the 1989 TV movie, "Cold Sassy Tree," in which she starred with Richard Widmark. In the early 1990s, she worked quite a bit in Europe and had a lot of TV credits. Feature films included DON JUAN DEMARCO and DRUNKS (both 1995), DUNSTON CHECKS IN and THE CHAMBER (both 1996), as modelling agency magnate Wilhemina in "Gia" (1998, HBO), THE MESSENGER: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC (1999) and the re-make of THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1999), this time as the Psychiatrist. More recent credits include THE YARDS and STANLEY'S GIG (both 2000), THE YELLOW BIRD (2001), THE CALLING (as Mae West), CHANGING HEARTS, THE RULES OF ATTRACTION and MID-CENTURY (all 2002), BLIND HORIZON (2003), EL PARINO, JENNIFER'S SHADOW and BACK WHEN WE WERE GROWNUPS (all 2004), GHOSTS NEVER SLEEP (2005), CUT OFF, HOLLYWOOD LOVE STORY, RAIN and an episode of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (all 2006), and COUGAR CLUB, SAY IT IN RUSSIAN, DR. FUGAZZI, FLICK, THE GENE GENERATION and AMERICAN COWSLIP (all 2007). Nominated for Actress 1967: BONNIE AND CLYDE
