(1931 -     )
Biography from several sources

As Captain in Thank You for Smoking (2005)

Born in San Diego, CA; educatied at Principia College, Elsah IL (drama, history, government) and the Neighborhood Playhouse, New York. Cool, versatile performer who moved from supporting to leading roles in the 1970s. Duvall is equally adept with menacing, authoritarian figures (the "surfing colonel" in APOCALYPSE NOW, 1979) or sympathetic characters (faded country singer Mac Sledge in TENDER MERCIES, 1983). A prolific actor, he has appeared in a high proportion of quality productions, including such modern classics as M*A*S*H (1970, as Maj. Frank Burns), the first two GODFATHER films (1972 and 1974, as Corleone family consigliere Tom Hagen) and NETWORK (1976, as UBS Executive Senior Vice President / Chairman of the Board Frank Hackett).

After appearing on television for a couple of years, Duvall made his big screen debut as "Boo" Radley in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (1962) and appeared in a number of small parts in the 1960s in such films as CAPTAIN NEWMAN, M.D. (1963), THE CHASE (1966), THE DETECTIVE, COUNTDOWN and BULLITT (all 1968), and TRUE GRIT and THE RAIN PEOPLE (both 1969). The early 1970s saw him coming into his own as an actor. Besides those mentioned above, his credits include the title character in George Lucas' THX 1138 (1971); Jesse James in THE GREAT NORTHFIELD, MINNESOTA RAID, Frank Harlan in JOE KIDD, and Jackson Fentry in the little-seen gem TOMORROW (all 1972). Other notable screen credits include THE SEVEN-PER-CENT SOLUTION (1976), THE BETSY (1978), the title role in "Ike" (1979 TV mini-series), THE NATURAL (1984), LET'S GET HARRY (1986), THE HANDMAID'S TALE, DAYS OF THUNDER and CONVICTS (all 1990), RAMBLING ROSE (1991), NEWSIES and the title role in the made-for-TV movie STALIN (both 1992), FALLING DOWN (1993), THE PAPER (1994), THE STARS FELL ON HENRIETTA and THE SCARLET LETTER (both 1995), A FAMILY THING, PHENOMENON and SLING BLADE (all 1996), Robert Altman's THE GINGERBREAD MAN (1998), DEEP IMPACT (1998), GONE IN SIXTY SECONDS, A SHOT AT GLORY and THE 6TH DAY (all 2000), JOHN Q, GODS AND GENERALS and ASSASSINATION TANGO (which he wrote, produced, directed and starred in) (all 2002), SECONDHAND LIONS and OPEN RANGE (both 2003), KICKING & SCREAMING and THANK YOU FOR SMOKING (both 2005), LUCKY YOU, WE OWN THE NIGHT and THE LAST FULL MEASURE (all 2007), and GLAD ALL OVER and A NIGHT IN OLD MEXICO (both 2008).

Duvall has been nominated for six Oscars® (he won for TENDER MERCIES) and has earned three Emmy nominations: For his flawless performance as Texas Ranger Gus McCrae in the TV adaptation of Larry McMurtry's "Lonesome Dove" (1989); the title role in STALIN (1992); and as Adolf Eichman in THE MAN WHO CAPTURED EICHMANN (1996). He won the 1980 BAFTA Award as Best Supporting Actor for APOCALYPSE NOW and was nominated for THE GODFATHER (1972) and NETWORK (1976). Golden Globe wins include APOCALYPSE NOW, TENDER MERCIES, LONESOME DOVE, and STALIN, and a nomination for A CIVIL ACTION. He was nominated for Screen Actors Guild Awards for THE MAN WHO CAPTURED EICHMANN, SLING BLADE (cast), THE APOSTLE, and won supporting actor for A CIVIL ACTION. He was awarded Pasinetti Awards by the Venice Film Festival for Best Actor in TRUE CONFESSIONS (1981) and THE LIGHTSHIP (1985).

In 1975 Duvall completed an award-winning documentary, WE'RE NOT THE JET SET, about a Nebraska rodeo family, and made his narrative feature directing debut with the engaging, well-received portrait of New York Gypsy life, ANGELO, MY LOVE (1983). He produced and directed himself to another Best Actor nomination in THE APOSTLE (1997) and seemed to hit his stride as one of the screen's most engaging and versatile performers.
