Born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Dutch cinematographer and director of short films who started behind the camera for BRANDING (a.k.a. "The Breakers", 1929). Other credits include ZUIDERZEEWERKEN (1930), HELLO EVERYBODY (1933, asst. dir.), NIEUWE GRONDEN / NEW EARTH and L'ÎLE DE PÂQUES (both 1934), THE SPANISH EARTH (1937), THE 400 MILLION (1939), A CHILD WENT FORTH (1941, producer), HIGH OVER THE BORDERS (1942, editor), THE LAST SHOT (1946, director), FORGOTTEN ISLAND (1947, director), FORTRESS OF PEACE (1965, writer & director), and SKY OVER HOLLAND (1967, director)
