Born in Chicago, IL; educated at the University of Chicago and Columbia. He launched his career in 1961 with the play Blood, Sweat and Stanley Poole, which he wrote in collaboration with his younger brother, screenwriter, novelist and playwright William Goldman. On his own, he established his reputation with the play The Lion in Winter (1967) and won an Academy Award the following year for his screen adaptation of the historical drama. In addition to several other screenplays [THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS and NICHOLAS AND ALEXANDRA (both 1971), ROBIN AND MARION (1976), WHITE KNIGHTS (1985), and CYBER BANDITS (1995)], he wrote the Broadway musical Follies (1972), in collaboration with Stephen Sondheim.
