Born in Tel Aviv, Palestine (now Israel). Israeli poet, novelist, journalist, and documentary filmmaker currently living in Jerusalem. Following time in Europe where he helped Jews emigrate to Palestine after World War II, he fought in the 1948 Israeli War of Independence. The impact of these events on Gouri is evident in his writing.

He has been called "Israel's Poet." He was awarded the Bialik Prize for Literature in 1975 and the Israel Prize for Poetry in 1988. His famous poem Imo ("his Mother") is a moving call for compassion and empathy for Israel's defeated enemies. On the other hand, Gouri was also one of those who called for "The Complete Land of Israel" to be incorporated into the state.

Writer, co-producer, and co-director of HA-MAKAH HASHMORIM V'ECHAD / THE 81ST BLOW (1974). Other film works include HA-YAM HA'AHARON / THE LAST SEA (1980) and PNEI HAMERED / FLAMES IN THE ASHES (1985).
