Thor Heyerdahl

Born in Larvik, Norway; educated at the University of Oslo (biology and geography); distantly related to actors James Arness and Peter Graves. Norwegian adventurer and documentary filmmaker, whose KON-TIKI (1950), the film based on his book and documenting his legendary adventure crossing the Pacific in a 40-foot balsa raft in 101 days, won an Oscar® for 1951. (Heyerdahl directed, Olle Nordemar produced). His other films included GALAPAGOS (1955), AKU-AKU (1960), and RA (1972, aka THE RA EXPEDITIONS).

Heyerdahl was a member of honour of the "Adventures Club, Denmark" and received the "Award of Honour" at the Danish "Adventure Film Festival" in 2000. Together with actress Liv Ullmann he hosted the opening and closing ceremonies at the 1994 Winter Olympic Games at Lillehammer, Norway. According to a public opinion poll in his homeland, he was considered to be the "Norwegian of the Century."

He was the Vice-President of the World Association of World Federalists, which works to improve international co-operation under the leadership of a stronger UN organisation. Furthermore he was the Vice-President of the Worldview International Foundation, which through practical education, attempts to improve understanding between developing and developed countries. He was also an international patron of the United World Colleges, which brings students with different cultural backgrounds together in schools in many countries. As a natural scientist he held lectures and published articles about the threat to the global environment, especially with regard to the pollution of the seas. He was an advisor to the World Wildlife Fund International, and a member of the committee that annually selects the winners of the UN's environmental protection prize. Heyerdahl published a number of books. His book about the Kon-Tiki expedition, for example, has been published in 70 languages and has sold around 50,000,000 copies.

He lived his last years in Güímar, Tenerife, Canary Islands with his thrid wife, actress and former Miss France Jacqueline Baer, whom he married in 1991. He died in Colla Michari, Italy, in 2002 from a brain tumor.
