Arthur Hiller
(1923 -     )
Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film

Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; educated at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, the University of Toronto (psychology) and the University of British Columbia (law). Although he has worked in a variety of genres, from the dramatic (THE MAN IN THE GLASS BOOTH, 1975) to the romantic (LOVE STORY, 1970), Hiller is on surest ground with light comedy, perhaps a reflection of his background in TV. SILVER STREAK (1976) and THE IN-LAWS (1979, also producer) are two of his more inspired comic efforts. Other memorable directing credits include THE WHEELER DEALERS (1963), THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY (1964), PROMISE HER ANYTHING (1965), PENELOPE (1966), TOBRUK (1967), THE OUT-OF-TOWNERS (1970), PLAZA SUITE (1971), THE HOSPITAL (1971), MAN OF LA MANCHA (1972, also producer), NIGHTWING (1979), AUTHOR! AUTHOR! (1982), ROMANTIC COMEDY (1983), THE LONELY GUY (1984, also producer), THE BABE (1992), CARPOOL (1996), AN ALAN SMITHEE FILM: BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN (1997, also appeared as Alan Smithee), and his most recent film, NATIONAL LAMPOON'S PUCKED (2006).

Hiller was President of the Director's Guild of America from 1989 until 1993. He became president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1993 and served until 1997; was re-elected president in 1999 and served until 2001. He has been married to his wife Gwen since 1948.
