Joel Hirschhorn
(1938 - 2005)

Author (with Maureen McGovern) of the book The Complete Idiot's Guide To Songwriting (Alpha; 2nd edition, 2004). Hirschhorn was uniquely qualified to write a "how-to" songwriting book. A two-time Oscar® winning composer, he sold over 93 million records and was nominated for two Tony® Awards. Moreover, he had success in multiple fields, including country, r&b, pop, film, theatre and commercials. However, Hirschhorn had his greatest success in the pop, film and Broadway fields.

Began composing film music with his partner, Al Kasha, in 1965 with THE FAT SPY. A couple of their other notable (non-nominated) credits are THE CHEYENNE SOCIAL CLUB (1970, songs) and FREAKY FRIDAY (1976, songs). They also wrote songs for several made-for-TV movies and specials. Their Broadway credits include new songs for the stage musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1982) and music and lyrics for Copperfield (1981).
