Born in England. After a long period of apprenticeship as a camera assistant and camera operator beginning in 1941 (including MAJOR BARBARA, 1941; BRIEF ENCOUNTER, 1945; GREAT EXPECTATIONS, 1946; THE BLUE LAGOON and FLOODTIDE, both 1949; THE ADVENTURERS and THE MAGIC BOX, both 1951; DECAMERON NIGHTS, SOUTH OF ALGIERS, MELBA and SAADIA, all 1953; A HILL IN KOREA and MOBY DICK, both 1956; HEAVEN KNOWS MR. ALLISON, A FAREWELL TO ARMS and TIME WITHOUT PITY, all 1957; and THE KEY, 1958), he became a lighting cameraman in the late 50s and as such was responsible for the cinematography of a number of major productions on both sides of the Atlantic. |
Ibbetson's notable cinematography credits include THE HORSE'S MOUTH (1958), THE ANGRY SILENCE and THERE WAS A CROOKED MAN (both 1960), WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND (1961), NINE HOURS TO RAMA (1963), THE CHALK GARDEN (1964), THE COUNTESS FROM HONG KONG (1967), INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU and WHERE EAGLES DARE (both 1968), WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (1971), A DOLL'S HOUSE (1973), A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (1977), HOPSCOTCH (1980), THE BOUNTY (1984) and SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE (1985). His last project was the made-for-TV movie "Babes in Toyland" (1986).
