Son of cinematographer Benjamin H. Kline (1894 - 1974), who filmed over 200 features at Columbia Pictures, including ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK (1956).

Richard Kline began in television in the mid-1960s, filming the pilot episode for the TV series "The Monkees." His feature film credits include HANG 'EM HIGH and THE BOSTON STRANGLER (both 1968), GAILY, GAILY (1969), THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN and KOTCH (both 1971), SOYLENT GREEN, BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES, THE HARRAD EXPERIMENT and THE DON IS DEAD (all 1973), MR MAJESTYK, THE TEMINAL MAN and HARRAD SUMMER (all 1974), MANDINGO (1975), THE FURY and WHO'LL STOP THE RAIN (both 1978), STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (1979), THE COMPETITION (1980), BODY HEAT (1981), DEATH WISH II (1982), BREATHLESS (1983), THE MAN WITH ONE RED SHOE (1985), HOWARD THE DUCK (1986), MY STEPMOTHER IS AN ALIEN (1988), DOUBLE IMPACT (1991), and MEET WALLY SPARKS (1997).

In 2006, Kline was honored with the ASC's Lifetime Achievement Award.
