Born in Los Angeles. His father was pioneer special effects cinematographer Hans F. Koenekamp (1891-1992). He entered films as an apprentice cinematographer in the late 1940s and worked, often uncredited, as assistant camera (RAINTREE COUNTY, 1957) and camera operator (WATUSI, 1959; FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE, 1962; THE HOOK, 1963). Got his start as a first cameraman on TV series "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." in 1966. A solid craftsman who demonstrated his skill with color cinematography in many Hollywood films, such as THE GREAT BANK ROBBERY (1969), BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (1970, BILLY JACK, SKIN GAME and HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WANDA JUNE (both 1971), PAPILLON (1973), THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT (1977), THE AMITYVILLE HORROR and THE CHAMP (both 1979), FIRST MONDAY IN OCTOBER (1981), THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACROSS THE 8TH DIMENSION (1984) and FLIGHT OF THE INTRUDER (1991).
