Born in Barnt Green, near Birmingham, England. Tall, distinguished, elegant leading lady of the British stage and screen. A businessman's daughter, she began training for the stage at 15 and played her first professional role at 16. She rose to prominence in the late 40s after joining the reborn Old Vic company, under the direction of Laurence Olivier and Ralph Richardson, and thereafter gained growing recognition by London and Broadway critics for the quality of her playing. She won Tony® Awards for her performances on Broadway in Separate Tables (1956) and The Night of the Iguana (1962). She typically played fragile, sensitive, highly vulnerable women. Although her film career was only secondary to her stage achievements, she portrayed many memorable screen roles and was nominated for an Oscar® as best supporting actress for THE GO-BETWEEN (1971). Other notable screen credits include WALTZ OF THE TOREADORS (1962), THE BEST MAN (1964), THE LOVED ONE (1965), THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT (1969) and GALILEO (1975). Her first husband was publisher Max Reinhardt; her second, actor Laurence Harvey; and her third and last, actor Michael Wilding.
