In a 50-year career of providing music for plays, movies and television, Matz worked on shows featuring such stars as Barbra Streisand, Burt Bacharach and Carol Burnett. In recent years, Matz held fund-raising concerts to benefit AIDS victims, accompanied by his wife, singer Marilynn Lovell.
Known for inserting musical jokes into his arrangements, Matz delighted the singers he worked with and the audiences looking on. He had a long association with Streisand and conducted most of the material on her first five albums for Columbia Records. The relationship led to a string of accolades for Matz: a Grammy® for his arrangements on Streisand's 1964 album, "People"; an Emmy® for her 1965 television special, "My Name Is Barbra"; an Academy Award® nomination for best original score for her 1975 film, FUNNY LADY, and another Grammy nomination in 1986 for arranging, conducting and producing her platinum recording "The Broadway Album." Matz also won an Emmy for a 1973 segment of "The Carol Burnett Show." He was musical director of Burnett's show for eight years. He won at least 10 other Emmy nominations for his contributions to more than 140 television movies and specials. Matz in recent years had been central to the success of Los Angeles' "Reprise! Broadway's Best," which since 1997 has staged revivals of historic Broadway musicals. Matz died from lung cancer in Los Angeles at the age of 73.
