American motion picture writer-producer-director who has beer active in the industry since 1967. A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Director's Guild of America, his many and diverse films include both landmark and award-winning productions including The 1974 Academy Award® winning feature documentary, THE GREAT AMERICAN COWBOY. That success was followed by several feature films, television projects, and an impressive array of additional recognition. In addition to the 10-hour miniseries "Wild West" for which he received an Emmy® nomination. Merrill has completed nine 70mm films. Widely recognized as a pioneer of the "destination" film, Merrill's GRAND CANYON - THE HIDDEN SECRETS (1984) is one of the 25 most successful independent films in history. Merrill is also a founding partner of Odyssey, which introduced the first IMAX-compatible projection and camera system, Ultra 70.
