Born Wally Stott in Leeds, Yorkshire, England; was biologically a man before having a sex change operation in 1972. Grew up playing music and joined big bands in England through World War II. Started studying harmony, conterpoint and composition in London with Matyas Seiber and learned to arrange music. In 1950, became musical director of Philips Records (UK) and arranged and conducted weekly for contract artists and occasional guests like Rosemary Clooney and Mel Tormé. Started to score films under own name in 1953. Other notable scoring credits include PEEPING TOM (1960), THE LOOKING GLASS WAR (1969), WHEN EIGHT BELLS TOLL (1971), WATERSHIP DOWN (1978) and several British and American TV series and made-for-TV movies.
