Born in New York City; educated at Stanford; son of stage actor and film producer Robert North. Veteran writer who shared an Academy Award with Francis Ford Coppola for the screenplay of PATTON (1970). His first film was at Paramount in collaboration with Frank Tuttle: ALL THE KING'S HORSES (1934); that same year, he collaborated on the screenplay for ONE NIGHT OF LOVE, which was shot at Columbia. Other notable screen credits (alone or in collaboration) include FLAMINGO ROAD (1949, add'l dialogue), YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN (1950), THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (1951), THE OUTCASTS OF POKER FLAT (1952), DESTRY (1954), COWBOY (1958), SINK THE BISMARCK! (1960), DAMN THE DEFIANT! (1962) and METEOR (1979, story & screenplay).
