Sound recordist and later re-recordist whose career began almost with the advent of sound in movies. He started at RKO in 1930, where he remained for 25 years and recorded sound for over 200 films, including FRAMED, ALIAS FRENCH GERTIS, MIDNIGHT MYSTERY, DANGER LIGHTS, WHOOPEE! and THE SILVER HORDE (all 1930), CIMARRON (1931), THE LOST SQUADRON (1932), KING KONG (1933), OF HUMAN BONDAGE (1934), QUALITY STREET (1937), SISTER KENNY, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and NOTORIOUS (all 1946), THE FARMER'S DAUGHTER (1947), SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON (1949), FLYING LEATHERNECKS and THE THING (FROM ANOTHER WORLD) (both 1951), SUSAN SLEPT HERE (1954) and SON OF SINBAD (1955). When DesiLu ceased feature film production in the mid-1950s, Portman moved to UA and recorded sound for the TV series "Stoney Burke" and "The Fugitive." He then became a sound re-recordist for features at Columbia and Mirisch, and his credits include ITS A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD (1963), THE COLLECTOR, THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL and SHIP OF FOOLS (all 1965), THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING! THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING! and HAWAII (both 1966), HOW TO SUCCEED..., THE WAR WAGON, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT and GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER (all 1967), THE PARTY, THE DEVIL'S BRIGADE, THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR and HELL IN THE PACIFIC (all 1968), RIOT, CHASTITY, GUNS OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, THE SECRET OF SANTA VITTORIA, THE FIRST TIME, FLAREUP and THE REIVERS (all 1969), and his last film, THE McMASTERS (1970). His son is Oscar®-winning sound re-recording mixer Richard Portman.
