Born in Chortlon-Cum-Hardy, England. Trained at the Central School of Art in London. His first work brought him notice in the theatrical world, and the position of costume designer for the Oxford Playhouse soon followed. Early in his career, Mr. Powell worked as an assistant to other designers including Sir Cecil Beaton. He won his first Tony® Award with Sir John Gielgud's stage production of School for Scandal in 1961. TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT, directed by George Cukor (1972), one of his first films, was an immediate success and won him his first Academy Award.
