Born in Brooklyn, NY; educated at Gettysburgh College. The son of a Fox Movietone News cameraman, he shot TV commercials before entering features in the early 70s. He quickly became established as one of Hollywood's most dependable and inventive cinematographers, with five Oscar nominations to his credit. He took a leave of absence from feature films for much of the 80s to run his own commercial production house, but returned to Hollywood in the early 90s. Other notable (non-nominated) credits include THE GANG THAT COULDN'T SHOOT STRAIGHT (1971), PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM and THE HEARTBREAK KID (both 1972), THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE (1974), THE STEPFORD WIVES and THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR (both 1975), THE RETURN OF A MAN CALLED HORSE (1976), SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (1978), THE ELECTRIC HORSEMAN (1979), THE ROSE (1979, add'l photographer: concert scenes), THE BLACK MARBLE (1980), TRUE CONFESSIONS, ABSENCE OF MALICE and TAPE (all 1981), VISIONQUEST (1985), I LOVE YOU TO DEATH and HAVANA (both 1990), THE ADDAMS FAMILY and GRAND CANYON (both 1991) and FRENCH KISS (1995).
