Kristine Samuelson has been an independent producer for twenty-six years. Her filmmaking credits include TIME HAS NO SYMPATHY, ARTHUR AND LILLIE, 2 A.M. FEEDING, AN ARTIST'S JOURNEY, WRONG PLACE, WRONG TIME, EMPIRE OF THE MOON, and RIDING THE TIGER. Her work has been broadcast on PBS and the Arts and Entertainment Network and has screened at numerous film festivals, including the Sundance Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, San Francisco Film Festival (Special Jury Prize), British Short Film Festival, Mostra Internazionale de Montecatini, Athens Film Festival (Best of Category), and Charlotte Film Festival (Best Experimental Documentary). Samuelson was nominated for an Academy Award for ARTHUR AND LILLIE and has received Artist's Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the California Arts Council. In addition to a Dean's Award for Distinguished Teaching, she has been awarded the Undergraduate Teaching Award in the Department of Communication and a Bing Teaching Award. She was the McNamara Faculty Fellow in the School of Humanities and Sciences for 1996-97. In 1999, Samuelson joined the Board of the Independent Television Service. She recently completed RIDING THE TIGER, which has screened at the Margaret Mead Film Festival, the Vila de Condi Festival, San Francisco Asian American Film Festival, Portland International Film Festival, Environmental Film Festival, and. the Pacific Film Archive (partial list).
She received her B.A.(cum laude) from the University of California at Los Angeles and has an M.A. in Communication from Stanford University. She worked in the film industry for twelve years before returning to Stanford to teach in 1983. She is currently Chair of the Department of Communication, where she is a professor in the documentary film and video graduate program. Her interests include documentary digital video production, and new media.
