Former TV writer ("Ben Casey" and "The Nurses") who began a successful film career in the mid-1960s. Sargent's deft, sentimental treatments of "serious" topics have earned him three Oscar® nominations; he won the award for JULIA (1977) and ORDINARY PEOPLE (1980).
