Born in London, England. Celebrated English cinematographer who began his career as a newsreel cameraman during WW II, when he filmed the German invasions of Poland and Holland. Slocombe subsequently joined Ealing Studios, where he shot such acclaimed films as KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS (1949) and THE MAN IN THE WHITE SUIT (1951), and later contributed to landmark British features of the 1960s including THE L-SHAPED ROOM (1963) and THE SERVANT (1963).
Slocombe's more recent credits include JULIA (1977) for Fred Zinnemann, and INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (1984) for Steven Spielberg. He's famous for never using a light meter on the set of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981).
