Harold E. Stine

The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
Born in Chino, CA. Started in the sound department at Pathé in 1929 and worked as a boom operator and recordist until 1934 (OH, YEAH! & THE RACKETEER, both 1929; OFFICER O'BRIEN, HOLIDAY & HER MAN, all 1930; BEYOND VICTORY, REBOUND & DEVOTION, all 1931; KING KONG, 1933; OF HUMAN BONDAGE, 1934). He started working with special effects photography in the mid-1940s, which culminated in his work on photographic effects for MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949) at RKO and process photography for THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1951).

Stine then moved into television, shooting the TV series "The Adventures of Superman" from 1953 to 1954 and then a series of six "Superman" films with George Reeves for Fox in 1954. He then went to the TV series "Maverick" in 1957 and then the feature film GIRL ON THE RUN (1958) and its spin-off TV series, "77 Sunset Strip." In 1962, he left television and returned to features. His other notable (non-nominated) cinematography credits include BLACK GOLD (1963), THE INCREDIBLE MR. LIMPET and A HOUSE IS NOT A HOME (both 1964), JOHNNY RENO (1965) and CHUKA (1967). Then it was back to television for "Custer" and "The High Chaparral" (both series in 1967) and "Julia" (1968). He finished his career in features with William Castle's PROJECT X (1968), Robert Altman's M*A*S*H (1970), the independent THE TODD KILLINGS (1971) and Irwin Allen's THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972).
