Entered American film as a costume designer in 1967 (TIGER MAKES OUT) and worked in that capacity until 1978. Credits include ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968), THE ILLUSTRATED MAN, JOHN AND MARY and SOME KIND OF A NUT (all 1969), CARNAL KNOWLEDGE, A NEW LEAF and STEAGLE (all 1971), THE COWBOYS, THE HEARTBREAK KID and BAD COMPANY (all 1972), THE DAY OF THE DOLPHIN (1973), SHAMPOO and THE FORTUNE (both 1975), THE LAST TYCOON and KING KONG (gowns and native costumes) (both 1976) and F.I.S.T. (1978). She was nominated for Broadway's 1984 Tony® Award as Best Costume Designer for The Real Thing.

She then began a career as a producer of feature films and made-for-TV movies, several of which starred or were directed by Goldie Hawn, including PROTOCOL (1984), WILDCATS (1986), OVERBOARD (1987), MY BLUE HEAVEN (1990), CRISSCROSS (1992), SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT (1995) and executive producer of the TV movies "Truman" (1995) and "Hope" (1997). Sylbert was a writer and executive producer (with her current husband, actor Richard Romanus) of the television productions "Giving Up the Ghost" (1998) and "If You Believe" (1999).

Her first husband was production designer Paul Sylbert.
