Born in Los Angeles, CA; educated at UCLA. He was in the textile business and with a talent agency before becoming an independent producer. Several of his films enjoyed critical and/or commercial success, including THE BEST MAN (1964), THE GRADUATE (1967), THE GREAT WHITE HOPE (1970), THE DROWNING POOL (1975) and TRIBUTE (1980).
Other notable producing credits include THE YOUNG DOCTORS (1961), THE FLIM-FLAM MAN (1967), CAVEMAN (1981), JOHN CARPENTER'S THE THING (1982), MASS APPEAL (1984), THE MEAN SEASON (1985), SHORT CIRCUIT (1986), FULL MOON IN BLUE WATER and SHORT CIRCUIT 2 (both 1988), THE RIVER WILD (1994), BOOTY CALL (1997, exec. producer), AMERICAN HISTORY X (1998, exec. producer), "The Long Way Home" (1998, TV) and WHAT'S THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPEN? (2001, also exec. producer). Turman directed THE MARRIAGE OF A YOUNG STOCKBROKER (1971) and SECOND THOUGHTS (1983).
