Born in Sarrebrücken, Germany, near Strasbourg, France; has lived in Montréal, Québec, Canada since 1948. Although not a prolific animator, his work has been consistenly recognized around the world. His first work -- not nominated -- was ILLUSION (1975). Each of his other films received an Oscar® nomination, and two of them won Academy Awards. Full titles for his nominated films are: TOUT RIEN / ALL NOTHING (1980), L'HOMME QUI PLANTAIT DES ARBRES / THE MAN WHO PLANTED TREES (1987) and LE FLEUVE AUX GRANDES EAUX / THE MIGHTY RIVER (1993). Other works include CRAC (1981) and MÉMOIRES DE LA TERRE (2002). In 1964, Back worked as art director for SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAIN: QUÉBEC and CHAMPLAIN.
