Born in Beverly Hills, CA; educated at the University of Pennsylvania and University of Switzerland. Elegant, poised star of the 1960s and 70s who came to attention with her first film, playing the lesbian member of THE GROUP (1966). One of Bergen's few subsequent roles of note came with a superb performance in Mike Nichols's CARNAL KNOWLEDGE (1971), as the co-ed who gets involved with roommates Jack Nicholson and Art Garfunkel. Bergen revived her flagging career in the late 1980s, playing the acerbically witty title character of the popular sitcom, "Murphy Brown" (1988 - 1998).

Other notable screen credits include THE SAND PEBBLES (1966), VIVRE POUR VIVRE / LIVE FOR LIFE (1967), THE MAGUS (1968), SOLDIER BLUE (1970), THE WIND AND THE LION (1975), BITE THE BULLET (1975), THE DOMINO PRINCIPLE (1977), OLIVER'S STORY (1978), RICH AND FAMOUS (1981), GANDHI (1982, as Margaret Bourke-White), 2010 (1984, voice of "SAL 9000" - billed as Olga Mallsnerd), MISS CONGENIALITY (2000), SWEET HOME ALABAMA (2002), A VIEW FROM THE TOP and THE IN-LAWS (both 2003), and THE WOMEN (2008). Since the success of "Murphy Brown," she has appeared frequently on television.

Bergen's father was ventriloquist Edgar Bergen, and she was married to director Louis Malle from 1980 until his death in 1995.
