Born in London, England. Writer, director and producer who entered British film as an uncredited assistant to Stanley Kubrick on 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968). Other notable writing credits, alone or in collaboration, include THE PIED PIPER (1972), OMEN III: THE FINAL CONFLICT (1981, also assoc. producer), KING DAVID (1985), THE NAME OF THE ROSE (1986, also actor), BURNING SECRET (1988, director), SALT ON OUR SKIN (1992, a.k.a. "Desire", also director), THE CEMENT GARDEN (1993, also director), THE MESSENGER: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC (1999, also actor), and PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER (2006).

His mother was actress Judy Campbell (1916 - 2004). Brother of actress Jane Birkin, he is an authority on author and playwright J.M. Barrie. His son, poet/musician Anno Birkin, died in a Milan car crash in 2001 at the age of 20.
