Born in Bad Aussee, Austria; educated at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, Stuttgart, West Germany. One of few contemporary German-speaking actors to have established himself as an international star. Brandauer first came to prominence for his compelling performance as Hendrik Hofgen, an ambitious young actor adopted by the Nazi party in 1930s Germany, in István Szabó's MEPHISTO (1981).
Other notable credits include NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN (1983), STREETS OF GOLD (1986), HANUSSEN (1988), THE RUSSIA HOUSE (1990), WHITE FANG (1991), REMBRANDT (1999) and BETWEEN STRANGERS (2002). He was married to writer-director Karin Brandauer from 1963 until her death in 1992. In 2007, he married Natalie Krenn.
