Born Cherilyn Sarkisian in El Centro, CA. First made her name as half of the "Sonny and Cher" pop duo, opposite then-husband Sonny Bono. Their soft rock sound, daring psychedelic wardrobe, irreverent delivery and natural rapport with the audience aptly captured the mood of the times and their summer replacement TV series, "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour" (1971-74) became a major hit.
Cher made her film debut in WILD ON THE BEACH (1965) but began earning serious acclaim for her acting in the 1980s, with an Academy Award nomination as best supporting actress for SILKWOOD (1983), the best actress award at Cannes for MASK (1985) and the corresponding Oscar® for MOONSTRUCK (1987). Other notable film credits include COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME, JIMMY DEAN, JIMMY DEAN (1982), THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK and SUSPECT (both 1987), MERMAIDS (1990), THE PLAYER (1992), PRÊT-À-PORTER / READY TO WEAR (1994), FAITHFUL (1996) and TEA WITH MUSSOLINI (1999). She spends most of her time living in London and frequently appears on American television in tributes and retrospectives. Cher has a daughter, Chastity, by Bono and a son, Elijah, by second husband, rock performer Greg Allman, from whom she was divorced in 1978.
