Born in Antwerp, Belgium; educated at École Nationale de Photographie et Cinématographie, Paris and IDHEC, Paris. After shooting several of Alain Resnais's 1950s documentaries, established himself in the 60s as one of the world's top cinematographers of both black-and-white (e.g. Arthur Penn's MICKEY ONE, 1965) and color (e.g. Jacques Demy's THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT, 1968).
Other notable credits include LOVE AND DEATH (1975), MONSIEUR ALBERT (1976), THE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS and TESS (both 1979) and FOUR FRIENDS (1981).
