Born in New York City. His father, John Corigliano, Sr., was concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic from 1943 to 1966, and was seen on many of Leonard Bernstein's "Young People's Concerts," for which Corigliano, Jr., served as assistant director from 1958 until 1969. Corigliano, Jr., was educated at Columbia College (BA, cum laude. He was music director for WBAI. From 1987 - 1990, he was composer-in-residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for his "Symphony No. 2 for String Orchestra."
Other notable (non-nominated) music composing credits include REVOLUTION (1985), "Tales from the Hollywood Hills: A Table at Ciro's" (1987, TV theme music) and "The Ghosts of Versailles" (1992, TV - from his opera).
