William A. Fraker
(1923 -     )
Biography from Katz's Film Encyclopedia

Born in Los Angeles, CA. A graduate of the film school of USC (1950), he entered the industry as a still photographer and after a period of transition in the cutting room became an assistant cameraman, camera operator, and finally, in 1967, a director of photography. He was immediately recognized as a rising new talent and within a year was entrusted with such top projects as ROSEMARY'S BABY and BULLITT (both 1968). His association with Lee Marvin on the set of PAINT YOUR WAGON (1969) led to Fraker's first assignment as a director, MONTE WALSH (1970), a fine, melancholy Wester starring Marvin. Fraker was less successful with two other excursions in directing (A REFLECTION OF FEAR, 1973, and THE LEGEND OF THE LONE RANGER, 1981), but continued to impress as a cinematographer.

Other notable (non-nominated) cinematography credits include FORBID THEM NOT (1961), INCUBUS (1965, uncredited), GAMES, THE FOX and THE PRESIDENT'S ANALYST (all 1967), THE FOX (1968), DUSTY AND SWEET McGEE (1971), THE DAY OF THE DOLPHIN (1973), RANCHO DELUXE, ALOHA, BOBBY AND ROSE and COONSKIN (all 1975), GATOR and THE KILLER INSIDE ME (both 1976), EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (American scenes) (both 1977), AMERICAN HOT WAX (1978), OLD BOYFRIENDS (1979), THE HOLLYWOOD KNIGHTS and DIVINE MADNESS! (both 1980), SHARKY'S MACHINE (1981), THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS (1982), IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES and PROTOCOL (both 1984), FEVER PITCH (1985), SPACECAMP (1986), BURGLAR and BABY BOOM (both 1987), CHANCES ARE and AN INNOCENT MAN (both 1989), THE FRESHMAN (1990), HONEYMOON IN VEGAS and MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN (both 1992), TOMBSTONE (1993, also assoc. producer), THERE GOES MY BABY and STREET FIGHTER (both 1994), FATHER OF THE BRIDE PART II (1995), THE ISLAND OF DR. Fraker seved as President of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) 1979-1980, 1984-1985, and 1991-1992. In 2000, he received the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award.
