Began her career as a modern dancer, later segueing into choreography. She worked as a choreographer throughout the United States as well as having spent 10 years overseas working in both Europe and Asia. While in Tokyo, she met an extraordinary elderly man who told her a series of true stories about the human condition, all taking place on Christmas Eve (even though he was Buddhist) and during various wars. She felt compelled to pass on these stories but knowing they were not a dance piece, she applied to the American Film Institute's Directing Workshop for Women to learn how to turn them into film. Her first film, TALES OF MEETING AND PARTING (1984), was the result, which received an Academy Award nomination and also won numerous awards in festivals around the country. Glatter made her feature film directorial debut with New Line's successful coming-of-age comedy, NOW AND THEN (1995), featuring Demi Moore, Melanie Griffith, Rosie O'Donnell and Christina Ricci. Previously, she directed HBO's highly acclaimed "State of Emergency," which received a Cable ACE nomination for Best Picture as well as a nomination for the Humanitas award. Her other HBO films include "Into the Homeland" (1987) and "The Promise." Glatter later directed the romantic period drama THE PROPOSITION (1998), starring Kenneth Branagh, Madeline Stowe and William Hurt. She has also directed multiple episodes of "ER" (1994) including the 1998 season finale, and various espisodes of "Third Watch", "NYPD Blue" (1993), "Brooklyn South," "Murder One," the highly acclaimed "Freaks and Geeks" (1999), Steven Spielberg's "Amazing Stories" (1985) and "Twin Peaks" (1990) for David Lynch, where she received a Director's Guild Nomination. She has directed numerous commercials, including Proctor & Gamble, Blue Cross and Radio Shack. She directed the pilot of the critically acclaimed "Gilmore Girls" (2000), for Warner Brothers Television, which ran for seasons. She also directed "The Big House," a Touchstone TV movie for ABC and directed the WB Network television pilot "In My Life" for American Zoetrope and Turner Television. Highly in demand for directing series television, Glatter has recently helmed episodes of "Third Watch", "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit", "The O.C.","Numb3rs", "The West Wing", "Grey's Anatomy", "The Closer", "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip", "E.R.", "Heartland" and "Mad Men". A feature film, STAND BY LOVE, is in pre-production for 2008. Glatter now serves on the Western Directors Council of the Directors Guild of America, AFI's Education and Training Board, the Silver Circle of Women in Film, the Advisory Board of Step Up Women's Network, the Board of Directors of Mediascope and is a mentor for the Independent Feature Projects' Project Involve.
