Born in The Bronx, NY; educated at CCNY. Trained as an engineer, he found the profession ungratifying and in 1962 turned to acting with a stock company in Colorado. Off-Broadway and Broadway roles followed. His big break came on television, however, with a leading role in the TV movie "The Law" (1974). He went on to play the title role in the police series "Delvecchio" (1976-77), then starred in the hit comedy series "Taxi" (1978-83), for which he won two Emmy® Awards. He started another series, "Dear John," in 1988. On stage, he won an Obie® for Talley's Folly and a Tony® for I'm Not Rappaport. His busy TV schedule limited his feature film appearances.
Other notable screen credits include KING OF THE GYPSIES (1978), WITHOUT A TRACE (1983), THE GOODBYE PEOPLE and TEACHERS (both 1984), RUNNING ON EMPTY (1988), INDEPENDENCE DAY (1996), OUT IN THE COLD and MAN ON THE MOON (both 1999), A BEAUTIFUL MIND (2001), ZEYDA AND THE HIT MAN (2004), BROTHER'S SHADOW (2006), and a recurring role on the TV series "Numb3rs" (2005-07).
