Anjelica Huston
(1951 -     )
Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film

Born in Santa Monica, CA. Striking, raised in Ireland and London. Statuesque leading lady who made her film debut in a small role in father John Huston's SINFUL DAVEY before starring as a teenager in his medieval romance A WALK WITH LOVE AND DEATH (both 1969). After the death of her mother, ballerina Enrica Soma, Huston relocated to New York, where she pursued a successful career as a model. She returned to the screen in the 1970s and scored her first major breakthrough with an Oscar®-winning performance as a vengeful mob daughter in PRIZZI'S HONOR (1985).

Noted for her sophisticated aura of authority, her womanly sensuality and her expertise at portraying wretched or vulnerable women, Huston followed up with a series of virtuoso characterizations: as a romantic Irish wife trapped in a loveless marriage in her father's final film, THE DEAD (1987), which was scripted by her brother Tony Huston; as a mysterious, wealthy widow in the charming MR. NORTH (1988), directed by half-brother Danny Huston; as a desperate, neglected mistress in Woody Allen's CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS (1989); as a Holocaust survivor who returns as if from the dead to complicate the life of her remarried husband in ENEMIES, A LOVE STORY (1989); and as a hardened con artist vying with another con for the love of her estranged son (John Cusack) in THE GRIFTERS (1990). Huston successfully moved into lighter territory as the elegantly ghoulish Morticia Addams in THE ADDAMS FAMILY (1991) and ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES (1993), and in a more comic second venture with Allen, MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY (1993). In 1996, she debuted as a director with BASTARD OUT OF CAROLINA.

Other notable (non-nominated) screen credits include THE LAST TYCOON (1976), THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE (1981), FRANCES (1982), THIS IS SPINAL TAP and THE ICE PIRATES (both 1984), CAPTAIN EO (1986), GARDENS OF STONE (1987), "Lonesome Dove" (1989, TV mini-series), THE WITCHES (1990), THE PLAYER (1992), THE CROSSING GUARD (1995), AGNES BROWNE (1999, also producer & director), THE MAN FROM ELYSIAN FIELDS and THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS (both 2001), BLOOD WORK (2002), DADDY DAY CARE (2003), THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU (2004), THESE FOOLISH THINGS, ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL, MATERIAL GIRLS and SERAPHIM FALLS (all 2006), THE DARJEELING LIMITED and MARTIAN CHILD (both 2007), CHOKE and THE OTHER SIDE (both 2008), and THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX (scheduled for 2009).

Her 1985 Award as Best Supporting Actress made her the first third-generation Oscar-winner, following her grandfather, Walter Huston, and her father, who was nominated 15 times and won twice.
