Born in Palo Alto, CA; educated at the American Conservatory Theatre and LAMDA, London. Sympathetic, intelligent performer, mostly in supporting roles; played an effective lead in Joan Micklin Silver's CROSSING DELANCEY (1988). Irving, an accomplished stage actress, is the daughter of actress Priscilla Pointer (b. 1924) and the late Jules Irving (1925 - 1979), founder of San Francisco's Actor's Workshop and later artistic director of New York City's Repertory Theatre of Lincoln Center.

Other notable screen credits include CARRIE (1976), THE FURY (1978), THE COMPETITION and HONEYSUCKLE ROSE (both 1980), WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT (1988 - singing voice of Jessica Rabbit: "Why Don't You Do Right?"), A SHOW OF FORCE (1990), BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT (1993), CARRIED AWAY and I'M NOT RAPPAPORT (both 1996), DECONSTRUCTING HARRY (1997), THE RAGE: CARRIE 2 (1999), TRAFFIC (2000), THIRTEEN CONVERSATIONS ABOUT ONE THING (2001), TUCK EVERLASTING (2002), and HIDE AND SEEK (2006). She had a recurring role on the TV series "Alias" (2002-05).

Irving was married to director Steven Spielberg, with whom she has a child, from 1985 until their divorce in 1989. She also has a child with Brazilian director Bruno Barreto, to whom she was married from 1996 to 2005.
