Born in New York City; educated at Cornell. The author of such plays as Home of the Brave, The Time of the Cuckoo (SUMMERTIME), West Side Story and Gypsy, all of which have been adapted to the screen by others, he also wrote or collaborated on a number of original screenplays, including ROPE (1948), THE SNAKE PIT (1948 - uncredited), ANNA LUCASTA (1949), ANASTASIA (1956), BONJOUR TRISTESSE (1958) and THE WAY WE WERE (1973).
