Born in Chicago, IL; educated at the Chicago Conservatory (piano), Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI (philosophy) and the Lee Strasberg Institute, Los Angeles; daughter of John Madigan, a prominent Chicago attorney and media personality. Former rock musician turned lead and supporting player of stage, film and TV. Married actor Ed Harris in 1983, with whom she's appeared in Robert Benton's PLACES IN THE HEART (1984), Louis Malle's ALAMO BAY (1985), Harris' own POLLOCK (2000), JUST A DREAM (2002), UNFORGIVABLE BLACKNESS: THE RISE AND FALL OF JACK JOHNSON (2004), WINTER PASSING (2005), GONE BABY GONE (2007), and ONCE FALLEN (scheduled for 2009).

Madigan and Harris were among a strong minority of attendees of the 2000 Academy Awards to rufuse to applaud during director Elia Kazan's acceptance of his honorary Oscar®. They were protesting Kazan's contribution to the Hollywood blacklistling during the Cold War.
