Born in The Bronx, NY; grew up in Yonkers, NY. After an auspicious, Oscar®-nominated debut as Jake LaMotta's blonde wife Vickie LaMotta in Martin Scorsese's RAGING BULL (1980) -- a role she played while still a senior in high school -- Moriarty followed up with disappointing features like NEIGHBORS (1981). Her career was stalled by a car crash that necessitated major back surgery in 1982 and she seemed confined to obscure low-budget vehicles like WHITE OF THE EYE (1987) and BURNDOWN (1989) until making a comeback of sorts in the 1991 comedy SOAPDISH. Moriarty had a small role in Sean Penn's directorial debut, THE INDIAN RUNNER (1991), but it ended up on the cutting-room floor.
Other notable credits include KINDERGARDEN COP (1990), THE MAMBO KINGS and THE GUN IN BETTY LOU'S HANDBAG (both 1992), MATINEE and ANOTHER STAKEOUT (both 1993), FORGET PARIS and CASPER (both 1995), FOXFIRE (1996), COP LAND (1997), DIGGING TO CHINA (1998), P.U.N.K.S. (1998), GLORIA, CRAZY IN ALABAMA, BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER and RED TEAM (all 1999), PRINCE OF CENTRAL PARK, WELCOME TO HOLLYWOOD, NEXT STOP, ETERNITY and LITTLE PIECES (all 2000) and ANALYSE THAT (2002, as Cathy Moriarty-Gentile). In 1999, she married Joseph Gentile and gave birth to twins in 2000. Her third child was born in 2001.
